In our recent circle on Forgiveness, I was reminded how each personal story is also a ripple into the collective. Small groups like ours are one of the places where the world’s healing begins.

A survey of recent history reveals a gloomy picture: an ongoing series of conflicts, wars, and general turmoil. As a result, the human emotional landscape has become littered with angry, bitter, and vengeful feelings. The modern justice system, preoccupied with finding and proving guilt, does little to remedy this tragic situation. However, many individuals and groups are seeking ways to break the never-ending cycle of recrimination.

As Sergei O. Prokofieff writes in The Occult Significance of Forgiveness, the problem of forgiveness is urgent in our time:

• Forgiveness is urgently needed now, because our world is weighed down by cycles of resentment, retribution, and conflict — both globally and personally.
